As a signatory to the Millennium Declaration of September 2000, Georgia is committed to carrying out the Millennium Development Goals process and defining and fulfilling eight MDGs that address Georgia's specific needs. In Georgia the MDGs have become a tool for national stakeholders to discuss, prioritize, and advocate for development. The UN Country Team and civil society representatives supported and contributed to drafting the first Millennium Development Goals Report (MDGR), launched in June 2004, and the MDG Progress Report prepared in September 2005. These reports are the result of the Georgian government's close collaboration with a range of development partners. The reports chart progress achieved towards the goals and gauge the probability of the country achieving each of them by 2015. National MDG reports and concentrated media attention inspired the Tbilisi Municipality to launch the MDG localization process through the preparation of an MDG-based report. The main purpose of this work was to explore and demonstrate how the MDGs could be used to assess local poverty challenges and to serve as an engine for comprehensive local development.
In October 2006, the UNCT launched a campaign to promote the Millennium Development Goals and raise the public's awareness of the importance that each citizen contribute to the achievement of the country's development objectives. UNCT made a special effort to involve the media, youth, business people, artists, academia, and civil society activists in MDG awareness-raising activities.
