Make health your ‘new high’ in life, not drugs - Georgian and foreign artists unite against drugs

 Foreign and Georgian artists staged theatre performance with personal stories of such stars as Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Heath Ledger, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Dalida, Edith Piaf and others who were drug dependents and whose lives were taken by drugs. The actors read from the personal diaries of these famous musicians and actors and the performance also included video projection, music and theatrical elements.

Preserving Biodiversity in Ajara

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are launching a new initiative to assist the Protected Areas in Ajara Autonomous Republic.

Minister Khatuna Gogaladze and the Head of UNDP in Georgia, Niels Scott, signed an agreement today, 9 June 2014.

The Return of Colchis Pheasants

An incubator and breeding centre for hatching endangered Colchis Pheasant was opened in the Vashlovani Protected Areas.

Shalva Amirejibi, Deputy Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, Niels Scott, Head of UNDP in Georgia, and Rati Japaridze, Chairman of the Agency of Protected Areas attended.

In 2014 and 2015, over 1,000 species of Colchis Pheasants will be brought back to their habitat – the natural monument Eagle Valley, Kolkheti National Park, Ivri, Alazani and Mtkvari floodplain. Pheasants will be also handed over to the local households for care and breeding. The incubator is equipped with solar panels to guarantee an unimpeded operation. It also includes special areas for baby pheasants and grown-up species.

UN showcases its publications at Tbilisi International Book Fair

UN agencies operating in Georgia joined forced to put on view some of their latest publications and reports at the 16th Tbilisi International Book Fair, which was organized at the Expo Georgia Exhibition Centre from 29 May to 1 June 2014.

The book fair, yearly organized by the Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association, draws a large number of publishing houses and academic institutions from Georgia and other countries around the world.

The UN stall at the Fair was a  demonstration of the UN team spirit in Georgia. As in previous years, the Fair’s UN stall saw a significant demand for UN publications and handouts.

This event provided the United Nations a platform to network with visitors from all walks of life with a view to enhancing awareness about the Organization’s work and shedding light on UN issues and priorities.
